LATEST NEWS - Y&J Summer 2016

We're starting Youth and Juniors again from Wednesday 4th May. These happen for around 8 weeks during the summer term. We start from 6pm and come off the water at around 8pm - as the nights get longer we'll spend more and more time on the water with the kids. A debrief will follow the session so expect to be away about 30 mins after the boats come in.

What to expect!

Firstly, expect to have a lot of FUN!

We've got a group of around 20 children from age 8 upwards who dip into our Y&J events throughout the year. A friendly and welcoming bunch who really enjoy getting on the water and improving their skills.

Instructors

Our first class instructors come from within the club and range from Assistant Instructors who have themselves been through our Y&J program to Senior Instructors made up from a group of dedicated adults. The group is run under the watchful eye of our Chief Instructor, John Williams, who is part of the RYA setup. Joanne Barnes leads the Y&J program within the club and is an active SOLO racer at MSC. Our RYA affiliation ensures that the training is of the highest standard and since safety is our primary concern we run our program with an abundance of safety cover, both on and off the water.

Beginners - RYA Stage 1/2

We welcome beginners from the age of 8 - the ideal time to start is when the weather is a little kinder (warmer!).

Official RYA courses are run at the club and are the perfect way to get started. With a huge selection of boats from small Optimists to large multi adult boats we've got the perfect boat to get you started. Click Here to check out our training page to see when the next course is on!

The program we run during the summer term on a Wednesday night offers the chance to start from scratch and learn the basics. From learning the basics you can come down on a Saturday during social sailing (10am-4pm from late April through late September) to practice the skills under the watchful eye of our safety boats.

Intermediates - RYA Stage 3/4

As you progress through the stages our Youth and Junior activities build with you. We'll improve your sailing techniques bringing in more advanced skills that will get you sailing faster than you've sailed before and giving you confidence to take a boat out in the toughest conditions. We teach seamanship skills and handling skills throughout our sessions that set you up for life!

Racing - RYA Start Racing/Intermediate Racing

At MSC racing is a big part of our club. Many of our Youth and Junior members now are active sailors in our Thursday night summer series and throughout the year in our Sunday racing. This is a fantastic way to improve sailing and we strongly urge all of our Y&J's to learn how to race. Not only does this improve boat handling, boat speed, tactics and sailing awareness but we find that our Y&J's are picking up medals and silverware throughout the fleets at the club. It proves that what we teach makes a difference.

When the time is right we'll start to integrate racing into our training. Often kicked off in the winter Y&J program this really for those who've been sailing for some time and have RYA Stage 1, preferably working towards achieving their Stage 2 as a minimum. As the water temperature can be very cold and it is often windier in the autumn/winter - this leads to more capsizes. Children who join the Autumn program MUST have the correct level of clothing/equipment for the conditions (wetsuit/gloves/hats/spray top/boots (preferable to sailing shoes as feet get wet!).

Performance Day @ Datchet

Each year we organise a trip down to Datchet for our more experienced sailors. This focuses on high speed and high performance dinghies which feature spinakers/gennakers and trapeze! This is an absolute blast as it simply takes the fun to another level. Check out our photos of how much find this was last time out!

Parental Responsibilities

The club does not offer child care services to its members, all children who attend our Youth and Junior sessions must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
