Clear skies and steady 17mph winds from the North East greeted 5 home and 12 guest sailors to the MSC Solo Open. The format for the day was three races, one in the morning and two in the afternoon with the best 2 from 3 to count. Forecast for the day was for the wind to move to the North and then back to the North East as the day went on with wind steadily increasing.  As the start of race 1 approached the winds increased to 20mph+ with regular gusts in excess of this. The race team were kind enough not to set any gybe marks !

Race 1 got off at the second time of asking. The Maidenhead sailors congregated at the port end of the line away from the throng of boats at the starboard end. The theory being that they could exploit the greater wind (!!!) there and tack across in front of the boats on starboard.
This tactic was partially successful with Jon Hirsh and John Ewbank arriving at the windward mark in the top half of the fleet. However, by the third mark a small group including Mike Hobin (Oxford), Mike Ball (Papercourt), Godfrey Clarke (Fishers Green), Ian Ayres (Kingsmead), Steve Jones (Littleton) and Dan Goodman (Kingsmead) broke away from the chasing group. These six exchanged places constantly as the race progressed, however at the finish it was Mike Hobin who crossed first closely followed by Mike Ball with Godfrey Clark in third. Jon finished in 8th and John in 12th. Mike Pearcy was well placed until capsizing and retiring. Geoff Batchelder and Mark Savill battled on and finished to their great credit.

Following an excellent lunch, Race 2 saw the same course – with winds increasing further. Mike Hobin set the pace early on and extended his lead as the race progressed finishing first by some distance. In second place was Steve Jones closely followed by Ian Ayres who in turn was just ahead of Dan Goodman. Best placed again of the Maidenhead sailors was Jon in 12th.

Race 3 had the same course again. With Mike Hobin having already won the event he sat this race out. First away in this race was Dan Goodman who held the lead for the whole race to win. In second place for most of the race was Jon , however a spectacular capsize on one of the downwind legs saw him relinquish that position. In second place at the end was Mike Ball and in third place Steve Jones.

Jon Hirsh was the first maidenhead sailor in 11th place.

Top 3  placings were :

1. Mike Hobin (Oxford S4649)
2. Mike Ball (Papercourt S4714)
3. Dan Goodman (Kingsmead S4735)
