The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead (Cllr Eric Wiles) and his lady (Heather, lady mayoress), recently paid a courtesy visit to Maidenhead Sailing Club to see the new fleet of Topaz boats in action - these stylish yet safe boats were bought by the club with a 25% grant from RBWM to encourage local young folk to take up the healthful sport of dinghy sailing. The gods were smiling as the threatened storm dispersed as the Mayor was driven into the club and the rest of the evening was as balmy as could be hoped.
The Mayor and Mayoress followed the fleet round in the comfort of a safety boat navigated by the club commodore - Alan Dibble, but unfortunately disturbed a flock of geese that panicked, flew overhead and scored a direct hit on the lady mayoresses' pink suit - she quipped -"well I suppose it is biodegradable! - as you can see from the pictures it did clean up quite well!"
The racing was pretty close and the Mayor presented prizes to the winning helms (Adult class being won by John Mansfield and the Juniors by Adam Meekings) - he also took the opportunity to formally present the commodore with the RB cheque! All concerned that the evening had been a great success! Alan later remarked that the Topaz was proving a great attraction to young and lighter helms and the mayor's visit, with subsequent features in local papers, has created an upsurge in interest in dinghy sailing general and in MSC in particular!
